It’s another new year, and that means most of us have made resolutions. If I’m lucky, I’ll stick with most of mine for a few weeks, but this year, I thought I’d focus on just a couple that I feel confident I can stick to.

My first, of course, is to focus more and more on my growing family. One of the best parts of getting older is adding more grandchildren to my brood, and with Bobby and Claudia’s brand-new, beautiful triplets, I now have a whoppin’ 9 grandchildren—7 grandboys and 2 grandgirls. It’s hard with all of our busy schedules, but I really want to carve out more time for the whole family to get together (and I don’t mean just on holidays and birthdays!). The great thing with having so many grandchildren is that they all have so many cousins that are relatively close in age. I want to give those beautiful children as many opportunities as possible to grow up the best of friends, and if you ask me, there’s no better place for play dates than at Guinny’s house.

My second resolution, like many of you I’m sure, is to focus more on my health so that I can live a long, active life. I want to see my grandchildren grow up, graduate, go to college, get married, and if I’m lucky, have children of their own! While I’m not one for exercise, I have learned, as I’ve gotten older and had a few concerns with my health, how to eat healthier. Of course, Bobby has always been a healthy eater and has taught me a thing or two about this. When I first started eatin’ healthy, I ate a lot of salads, convinced that healthy food just wasn’t meant to be delicious. But since I love gettin’ in the kitchen and creating, I found some truly tasty ways to eat lighter. To help y’all keep your own healthy resolutions, I thought I’d share some healthier recipes to aid you in staying on track!

Happy New Year!

xoxo,

Paula

It’s almost January 1st; can you believe it? 2018 is an opportunity for a fresh start, and if you’re superstitious at all, some traditions can set your year on the right path.

In many Spanish-speaking countries, they eat twelve grapes at midnight, one for each stroke of midnight. Depending on the country, this could be to ward off evil, welcome prosperity, or bring good luck. In other places, people smooch at midnight to prevent a year of loneliness.

Here in the South? Well, it’s probably no surprise that our traditions are food-based. Every year, many Southerners (Paula included!) make a New Year’s Day meal out of hog jowl, black-eyed peas, greens, and hoppin’ John! The hog jowl represents both good health and good fortune. Black-eyed peas are said to represent pennies and greens are said to represent dollars, which add up to more wealth over time. And hoppin’ John is said to bring good luck! With good health, good luck, and good fortune, we’re sure to cover all of our bases on New Year’s Day!

Do y’all have any New Year’s Day traditions? Share with us in the comments section, so we can join in the fun!

Well, we’ve made it past Christmas and are full-speed-ahead towards 2021. I must have blinked or something, y’all. Is it just me or do the years keep goin’ by faster and faster?

While Michael and I love to sometimes take a little break from the craziness around the start of the New Year, you can nearly always find me cookin’ in the kitchen on New Year’s Day. I just love makin’ turnip greens, collards, hog jowl, and black-eyed peas, and that’s because I want to usher in good health, good luck, and prosperity. That’s what they say those foods do anyways. Maybe it’s just plain superstition, but superstition sure can be fun—and did I mention delicious?

Here are tasty recipes to cook on New Year’s Day if you’re feelin’ superstitious too:

Collard Greens

Turnip Greens

Black-Eyed Pea Dip

Stewed Collard Greens

Warm Turnip Green Dip

Quick Collard Green Sauté

Black-Eyed Pea Salad

Fried Collard Green Wontons

Black-Eyed Peas

Southern Collard Greens with Cornmeal Dumplings

Tell me in the comments section below about some of your New Year’s traditions and how you’ll be ringin’ in 2021. I can’t wait to hear from you!

Happy New Year, friends!

Paula
